Q

What is the role of the cell membrane?

A

It holds together the cell contents, such as the nucleus and cytoplasm. This membrane is partially permeable ; this means that some types of molecule can pass through it, while others cannot. This allows the cell membrane to control the movement of substances into and out of the cell.

Q

What is the cytoplasm made of?

A

70% is water. It contains many dissolved substances, such as salts, sugars and amino acids.

Q

What is the role of the cell wall?

A

The cell wall is the outermost structure in all plant cells. They provide shape and support to the cell and prevent it from bursting when it absorbs water.

Q

Is the cell wall permeable?

A

There are big spaces between the cellulose fibres of the cell wall. Most molecules can pass through these gaps, so the cell wall is said to be fully permeable.

Q

What is the role of the vacuole?

A

The vacuole helps the cell to stay rigid, stores substances and breaks down waste materials.

Q

What is the role of the chloroplast?

A

The chloroplast contains chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a pigment that traps light energy and converts it to chemical energy. This energy is used
for photosynthesis.

16
Q

What is the role of the starch grains inside chloroplasts?

A

These act as food stores. Animal cells store food as glycogen granules, which are found in the cytoplasm.

17
Q

Where can you find the root hair cell?

A

In the surface of roots.

18
Q

What is the function of a root hair cell?

A

Absorption of water and minerals from the soil.

19
Q

How do the features of a root hair cell help it to perform its function?

A

The finger-like extension increases the surface area for absorption of water and minerals.

20
Q

What is the function of a palisade mesophyll cell?

A

Photosynthesis

21
Q

How do the features of the palisade mesophyll cell help it to perform its function?

A

The cell contains many chloroplasts for photosynthesis.

22
Q

What is the function of a celiated epithelial cell?

A

Sweeps mucus upwards in trachea and bronchi.
