Cell structure Flashcards
flagellum
tail-like projection for locomotion
microvilli
finger-like projections on cell membrane, increase surface area of cell for increased rate of absorption/sectrion
centriole
stacked in pairs near nucleus, functions to separate chromosomes in cell divison
mitochondria
found in cytoplasm, creates energy (ATP) for intracellular activity
lysosome
vesicles pinched off from Golgi body, organelles that function to digest unwanted material in cell
smooth endoplasmic reticulum
does not contain ribosome, manufactures lipids, sent to Golgi body for secretion from cell
rough endoplasmic reticulum
bound to ribosome, synthesises proteins, sent to Golgi body for secretion from cell
cilia
hair-like extensions on membrane of some cells, moves material across surface
secretory vesicle
on cell membrane, functions for absorption or secretion from cell
nucleus
located within cell, controls cellular events, contains genetic information
nuclear membrane
protects nucleus contents, controls what enters/exits nucleus through pores
nucleolus
synthesises ribosomes
ribosomes
synthesises proteins for intra/extracellular use
golgi body
within cytoplasm, receives proteins and lipids RER and SER, packages up in secretory vesicles - sent to cell membrane for excretion, or synthesises lysosomes
cell membrane
semi permeable structure, gives cell shape and protects, controls what enters/exits, communicates with external environment
