cell structure Flashcards
what is the cell membrane?
A semi permeable protective layer which holds the cell together, it also recognizes signals from other cells and allows for communication between cells
what is the cell wall?
Made of a tough substance called cellulose, surrounds the plant cell and gives it its shape
centrioles
found near the nucleus, they help the cell during cell division and are only found in animal cells
chloroplast
organelles which contain a green chemical called chlorophyll. These give plants their colour and is the site of photosynthesis
cytoplasm
a jelly like substance which holds the organelles in place
Endoplasmic reticulum( smooth)
synthesises fats or lipids to create membranes
Endoplasmic reticulum(rough)
has ribosomes attached and is responsible for completing the synthesis of proteins
Golgi body
Is the post office of the cell. It packages, modifies, and transports materials to different locations inside and outside of the cell
Lysosomes
Break down food into particles, the rest of the cell can use and to digest waste
Mitochondria
The powerhouse of the cell. It uses cellular respiration to convert simple substances into energy( ATP)
Nuclear membrane
surrounds the nucleus and is covered with nuclear pores
Nucleolus
where the DNA is found and produces ribosomes
Nucleolus
where the DNA is found and produces ribosomes
nucleus
control center of the cell and contains DNA
ribosomes
Read DNA instructions to synthesise and package proteins. Some of the proteins may be used by the cell, others are sent out of the cell
Vacuole
Used to store material in the cell. in plants, is also responsible for turgor. Bigger in plant cells
Vesticles
Used to move material around the cell
what organelles are found only in the plant cell
chloroplasts, cell wall and vacuole
what is diffusion
The movement of individual molecules of a substance through a semi permeable barrier
It occurs from high concentration area to a low concentration area
What is osmosis
The movement of water molecules from a solution with a high concentration of water molecules to a solution with a lower concentration of water molecules
Through a cells semipermeable barrier
