Cell Review | Biology Flashcards
Prokaryotes
- Lacks a nucleus
- Bacteria
- Lack organelles
- single-called
Eukaryotes
- Contains nucleus
- Contains organelles
- evolve from prokaryotes
- multicellular
Name the major group of Eukaryotes + Examples
Plants - Oaks trees, clovers, flowers
Animals - Red fox, Beluga Whale
Fungi - Mushroom, Yeast
Protists - Amoeba, Paramecium, Euglena
Function of the ribosomes
makes protein
Function of the mitochondria
carries out cellular respiration to produce energy (ATP)
Function of the lysosomes
digests/breaks down molecules
Function of the golgi apparatus
(aka the Golgi process/body)- packages and delivers protein and other materials
Function of the Nucleus
stores DNA
Function of the Cell Membrane
regulates movement of materials in and out of the cell
Function of the Chloroplast
carries out photosynthesis
Function of the Vacuole
stores water, nutrients, and other materials in the cell (plants have a central vacuole)
If all cells have the same DNA in your body, how come they don’t all look the same, and how come they don’t all do the same job?
Because of cell specialization; some of the genes are turned on and others are turned off according to the function of that cell.
