Q

Interphase

A

Non-dividing stage before mitosis begins.
3 stages:
1. G1-Cells increase in size and number of chromosomes.
2. S-Chromosomes replicate
3. G2-Cells make material needed for division

Q

Chromosomes

A

S stage-Each chromosome goes from being single stranded to double stranded- sister chromatid

  • Each sister chromatid are identical
  • Sister chromatid are held together by the centromere.

Q

Mitosis

A

Cell division that makes two identical cells from one cell.

This is a type of asexual reproduction.

Q

Prophase

A

Prophase

  • Nuclear membrane dissolves
  • Chromosomes shorten and thicken (now visible)
  • Centrioles move to the poles (only animal cells)
  • Spindle fibers form between the centrioles

Q

Anaphase

A

Centromere split and sister chromatid are pulled apart by fibers; one toward each pole.

Q

Telophase

A
  • Chromosomes reach the pole; each pole has one of each kind.
  • Fibers disappear
  • Nuclear membranes form

Q

Cytokinesis

A

The cell membrane begins to pinch, divide, and then two cells form. (Animal cell)
The membrane divides and a cell plate is laid between the two cells making a cell wall. (Plant cell)

Q

Cell reproduction

A

Cells reproduce or divide in order to make new cells for growth and repair.
Cells have to remain small
As they get larger the volume increases faster than the surface area.
This can make it difficult for the cell to take in enough material to reach all parts of the cell.
