Cell parts Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
The primary functions of the nucleus are to store the cell’s DNA, maintain its integrity, and facilitate its transcription and replication.
What types of cells have a nucleus?
Both plant and animal but not prokaryotic
What is the function of a cell wall?
The cell wall is made of cellulose and gives support and shape to all plant cells. The structure is strong and rigid which allows the cell to be supported as turgor pressure increases.
What two parts are found in plant cells but not animal cells?
Cell wall and chloroplasts
Which organelle is found in an animal cell but not a plant cell?
mitochondria
What is the function of ribosomes?
Ribosomes assembles amino acids to make proteins for the cell.
What is the basic unit or building block of life?
cells
What is the smallest unit of matter?
cells
How do pro and eukaryotic cells work
A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific job.
What is an organism?
an individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form
What is a Organ System
A group of organs that work together to perform body functions
What is a biome
Large ecosystems with similar climate, animals, and vegetation.
What is a community
Contains multiple populations of different species living in a common area.
What is an individual?
single celled
What is a organism?
A community of biotic species and abiotic parts of an environment.
For example: birds, trees, elephant, sun, rock, water
What is a Biosphere?
Large neighboring biomes that interact across a planet. The term translates to “ball of sphere”.
For example: the Earth
What is a organ?
A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific job.
List the levels of organization from cells to biosphere:
A,M,Org,C,T,O,OS,Or,P,Co,E,B,BS
What does biotic mean?
of or relating to life
What does abiotic mean?
devoid of life
List all three parts of the cell theory
- All living thing came from cells 2. cells are the basic unit of life 3. Cells came from pre exising cells
What is Phototropism?
The turning of all or part of a plant (and other organisms) in response to the direction of light.
What is Gravitropism mean?
The turning of all or part of a plant (and other organisms) in response to the sensation or downward pull of gravity.
What is thigmotropism?
It’s where is reacts to touch.
Define turgor pressure
urgor, Pressure exerted by fluid in a cell that presses the cell membrane against the cell wall. Turgor is what makes living plant tissue rigid. Loss of turgor, resulting from the loss of water from plant cells, causes flowers and leaves to wilt.
Which type of cell(s) contain the organelle called a vacuole?
Plants
Which type of cell is larger, more complex, and generally rounder in shape? Eukaryotic or prokaryotic
Eukaryotic
What is the function of a vacuole?
To hold the water
What is the function of chloroplast?
Chloroplast captures light to give energy to the plant called photosynthesis.
what is Cytoplasm?
Cytoplasm is the gel-like fluid that fills the inside of ALL types of cells. It is the fluid that all parts of cells float in.
Which type of cells contain ribosomes? Plant, Animal, Prokaryotic?
Both
What part of the cell surrounds the entire cell (like an outer skin) and controls what comes in and out of the cell?
Cell membrane
What is mitochondria?
Mitochondria is the “power house” organelle of cells. It converts food into energy (ATP).
