Cell Organisation Flashcards
What are cells?
Cells are the basic building blocks that make up all living organisms.
What is the role of specialised cells?
Specialised cells carry out a particular function.
What is cell differentiation?
Cell differentiation is the process by which cells become specialised for a particular job.
When does differentiation occur?
Differentiation occurs during the development of a multicellular organism.
What do specialised cells form?
Specialised cells form tissues, which then form organs, which form organ systems.
What are large multicellular organisms composed of?
Large multicellular organisms are composed of systems inside them for exchanging and transporting materials.
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function.
Can tissues include more than one type of cell?
Yes, a tissue can include more than one type of cell.
What is muscular tissue?
Muscular tissue contracts (shortens) to move whatever it’s attached to.
What is glandular tissue?
Glandular tissue makes and secretes chemicals like enzymes and hormones.
What is epithelial tissue?
Epithelial tissue covers some parts of the body, like the inside of the gut.
What is an organ?
An organ is a group of different tissues that work together to perform a certain function.
Give an example of an organ and its tissues.
The stomach is an organ with muscular tissue to churn food, glandular tissue to digest food, and epithelial tissue to cover the stomach.
What is an organ system?
An organ system is a group of organs working together to perform a particular function.
What does the digestive system do?
The digestive system breaks down and absorbs food.
