Cell Organelles Functions Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
Stores genetic material and controls the cell
What is the function of the nucleolus?
Makes ribosomes.
What is the function of the vacuole?
Stores water and other materials.
What is the function of the chloroplast? (not in animals)
Carries out photosynthesis.
What is the function of the cell wall? (not in animals)
Acts as a barrier and helps maintain the shape of the cell.
What is the function of the mitochondrion?
Converts food into energy through cellular respiration. (ATP)
What is the function of the chlorophyl?
It traps photons of sunlight to power the photosynthesis reaction.
What is the function of the Golgi Apparatus?
It processes proteins.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Encloses the contents of the cell and controls what goes in and out of the cell.
What is the function of the Rough ER?
Makes and transports proteins. (contains ribosomes)
What is the function of the Smooth ER?
Makes fats and membrane proteins. (does not contain ribosomes)
What is the function of the cytosol?
Helps organelles to move within the cell. (jelly-like fluid)
What is the function of the lysosomes? (not in plants)
To rid cells of waste products. (digestive system)
What is the function of the centrioles? (only in animals)
Serves as cells skeletal system.
What is the function of the cristae?
Multiple folds of the mitochondrial membrane to increase the surface area around which ATP is formed.
