Cell Organelles and Identification Flashcards
Mitochondria
The powerhouses of the cell. They are organelles that act like a digestive system which takes in nutrients, breaks them down, and creates energy rich molecules for the cell
Cell Membrane
The thin outside layer that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell and controls the movement of materials into and out of the cell.
Cell Wall
The usually rigid nonliving permeable wall that surrounds the plasma membrane and encloses and supports the cells of most plants, bacteria, fungi, and algae
Nucleus
It is the main control center for the cell and acts kind of like the cell’s brain. Only eukaryotic cells have a nucleus. In fact, the definition of a eukaryotic cell is that it contains a nucleus while a prokaryotic cell is defined as not having a nucleus
Vacuole
Vacuoles are storage bubbles found in cells. They are found in both animal and plant cells but are much larger in plant cells. Vacuoles might store food or any variety of nutrients a cell might need to survive
Cytoplasm
Cytoplasm is the fluid that fills a cell. Scientists used to call the fluid protoplasm
Chloroplast
The organelles are only found in plant cells and some protists such as algae. … Chloroplasts work to convert light energy of the Sun into sugars that can be used by cells. The entire process is called photosynthesis and it all depends on the little green chlorophyll molecules in each chloroplast.
