Cell Organelles Flashcards
Cell theory tells us
- All living things are composed of cells
- Cells are the smallest working units of all living things.
- Cells come from pre-exiting cells from cell division
Cell Membrane
Regulates or determines what goes in and out of the cell. Protects and supports the cell.
Cytoplasm
Transports nutrients within the cell. Protects organelles.
Nucleus
Directs cell activities. Houses DNA.
Ribosomes
Synthesis or creates or makes protein.
Mitochondria
Releases or produces energy from sugar through chemical reactions. (Cellular respiration)
Chloroplast
Uses sunlight to create sugar or food for plants using the process of photosynthesis.
Golgi Bodies/Apparatus/Complex
Processes & Packages proteins and Lipids. Moves materials within and out of the cell in small sacs called vesicles.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Transports proteins and breaks down drugs in cells,
Lysosomes
Digests worn out and excess organelles, food particles, and engulfed bacteria and viruses.
Vacuole
Storage, digestion and waste removal. Large central Vacuole found in plant cells.
Cell Wall
Found only in plant cells and bacteria. Supports and protects the cell.
Flagella
Used for movement.
Cilia
Used for movement.
Cytoskeleton
helps cells maintain their shape and internal organization, and it also provides mechanical support that enables cells to carry out essential functions like division and movement.
