Cell Organelles Flashcards
A cell is …
The smallest structural and functional unit of a living organism:
- every organism is made of cells
what is each thing of the cell:
- sac
- fluid
- floaty things
sac = cell membrane (holds everything together)
fluid = cytoplasm
floaty things = organelles
Organelles are …
membrane bound compartments within the cell. They all have different functions that keep the cell alive.
Nucleus is
an organelle that contains the cells genetic information.
Chromosomes
Inside the cell nucleus made of DNA and tells the cell what it needs to be doing
Nucleolus
an organelle found in the nucleus and is where ribosomes are made
Ribosomes
they make proteins, found floating around the cytoplasm, or connected to the endoplasmic reticulum.
Endoplasmic reticulum
Connected to the nucleus, its a network of flattened interconnected membranes that act like ‘tunnels’ where substances can move.
Golgi body
staked membrane sacs that are not interconnected that process + package substances cells have made.
what is the function of the Golgi body
to process and package substances that the cell has made. they make substances and then are transported wherever they are needed.
lysosomes are for
They recycle and use tired organelles, they are formed by the Golgi body. They contain digestive enzymes.
Vacuoles function is
they are fluid filled sacs in the cytoplasm, they are for storage and support for plant cells.
chloroplasts
responsible for photosynthesis, is found only in the green tissue of plants and they contain their own DNA
Cytoskeleton is
the network of tiny microtubules that organizes the distribution of organelles. provides framework for the shape and movement of the organelle.
