Cell organelles Flashcards
What are the 3 Cell Organelles and their functions only found in plants?
Cell Wall: The cell wall is rigid and stable, giving plants their shape
Chloroplast: Where photosynthesis takes place, makes food for the cell
and Large Vacuoles: provide extra storage space, more prominent in plant cells, used to regulate water in the cell, stores extra food, water and minerals that the cell can use later
What are 3 Cellular Transport processes?
Diffusion, Osmosis, Active Transport
Diffusion
The mixing/spreading out of one kind of molecule into another,
It is the movement of fluids from an area of high concentration to a lower concentration
A form of passive transport
Osmosis
Term used for diffusion of water. The water moves from an area of more free water molecules to an area of less free water molecules
Another form of passive transport
Active Transport
active transport is when the molecule is by itself (low concentration) and wants to get to where all the molecules are (high concentration).opposite of diffusion
Cell Membrane
controls what enters and leaves the cell, it is selectively permeable
Cytoplasm
jelly like substance, helps give structure to the cell holds organelles in place, suspends organelles in cells
Golgi Apparatus
sorts and packages proteins and other molecules for transport out of the cell
Nucleus
Controls all activity in the cell, even cell division. All genetic material is stored here. Performs mitosis
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
ER packages and transports proteins and molecules throughout the cell, has ribosomes attached to it
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
has NO ribosomes attached, synthesizes lipids and packages large molecules like proteins or lipids
Ribosomes
builds protein
Mitochondria
powerhouse of the cell, converts glucose with oxygen to make energy for the cell to fuel cell activities
What 2 Organelles only appear in Animal cells?
Lysosomes: also called suicide sac, breaks down old or damaged organelles and waste
Centrioles: helps with cell division, plays in important role in mitosis and meiosis
Photosynthesis Equation
Word Equation: carbon dioxide + water + sunlight = oxygen + carbohydrate + water.
