Cell organelles Flashcards
What is the structure of the cell membrane?
The cell membrane surrounds the outside of ALL cells and is made up of a phospholipid bilayer.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
The cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell and is critical for communication and maintaining homeostasis.
What is a phospholipid bilayer?
A phospholipid bilayer is a structure consisting of two layers of fats (phospholipids), with hydrophilic heads (love water) facing outwards and hydrophobic tails (hate water) facing inwards.
What is the difference between Hydrophilic heads and Hydrophobic tails?
Hydrophilic heads love water and Hydrophobic tails hate water
What are the functions of proteins and carbohydrates in the phospholipid bilayer?
Proteins are embedded in the phospholipid bilayer for transport, while carbohydrates are embedded for structure.
What is the cytoskeleton?
The cytoskeleton is a network of threadlike fibers made up of protein.
What is the cytoplasm and what is it’s function?
The cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance that holds everything in place and provides a solution for chemical reactions to take place in.
What is the function of the cytoskeleton?
The cytoskeleton provides structural support, gives the cell its shape, and helps move organelles around.
What is the structure of the nucleus?
The nucleus contains genetic material (DNA) and can exist in two forms, chromatin (when DNA is spread out) and chromosomes (when DNA is condensed). It is surrounded by a nuclear envelope/membrane with pores that control what goes in and out.
What is the function of the nucleus?
The nucleus protects the DNA that controls the activities of the cell.
