Cell Organelles Flashcards
Necleus STRUCTURE
Membrane bound, round.
Necleus FUNCTION
The nucleus is responsible for all of the cells activities. It contains DNA molecules. Chromosomes are formed in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells from a complex of DNA and proteins.
Nucleolus FUNCTION
Situated inside the nucleus the nucleolus produces ribosomes.
Nucleolus STRUCTURE
Made up of proteins and RNA.
Ribosomes STRUCTURE
Made up of RNA molecules. No membrane. May float independently in cytoplasm or be attached to endoplasmic reticulum.
Ribosomes FUNCTION
Synthesise proteins.
Golgi apparatus FUNCTION
Modified proteins and transport them Around the cell in vesicles.
Golgi apparatus STRUCTURE
Flattened sacs enclosed in membrane
Mitochondria Function
Responsible for aerobic respiration, Provides cell with energy to produce ATP molecules
Mitochondria structure
A double membrane the inner membrane is repeatedly folded over to create cristae
The Interior is fluid called the matrix
Endoplasmic reticulum function
Attached to the nucleus outer membrane.
SmoothER Synthesises and stores lipids and carbohydrates
RoughER Synthesises and transport proteins.
ER Structure
A system of membranes made up of cisternae Which look like flattened sacs
Lysosomes function
A form of vesicle Responsible for breaking down cell waste and involved indigestion contains hydrolytic enzymes
Vacuoles function
Vacuoles contain cell sap, which helps the cell to maintain its shape
Vacuoles structure
Sacs lined with membrane, in the cytoplasm.
