Cell Membranes Flashcards
What does the ‘fluid mosaic’ structure consist of?
Extrinsic protein
Cholesterol
Protein channel
Phospholipid
Glycolipid
Glycoprotein
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What type of process is diffusion?
Passive
What is facilitated diffusion?
The net movement of particles but the use of carrier and channel proteins
What conditions is needed for facilitated diffusion?
Small polar molecules or molecules that are too big
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the net movement of solvent molecules from a region of their high water potential to one of their low water potential across a partially permeable membrane.
What factors affect membrane permeability?
Increasing the temperature increases membrane permeability.
Changing the solvent affects membrane permeability
What are the factors affecting the rate of diffusion?
The concentration gradient- the higher it is, the faster the rate of diffusion
The thickness of the exchange surface-thinner the exchange surface, the faster the rate of reaction
The surface area- the larger the surface area the faster the rate of reaction
The temperature
