Cell membranes Flashcards
What does cholesterol do to membrane fluidity when the temps are low
In low temps, cholesterol keeps phospholipids from packing together
What does cholesterol do to membrane fluidity when temps are moderate
At moderate temps, it prevents excess movement by getting in the way.
As temperatures increase
phospholipids move faster, making the membrane more fluid
As temperature decreases
phospholipid movement slows down and they begin to pack together
In animal cells (cells without walls) what happens to the cell in a hypotonic solution
They become lysed or can burst
In plant cells (cells with walls) what happens to the cell in a hypotonic solution
They are turgid (normal)
In plant cells (cells with walls) what happens to the cell in a isotonic solution
They become flaccid
