Cell Membranes Flashcards
What is the role of a fluid mosaic membrane?
Allows movement of substances between cells and their surroundings
Allows cells to communicate with each other by cell signalling
Why is a fluid mosaic membrane described as fluid?
Molecules within the membrane can move around
Why is a fluid mosaic membrane described as a mosaic?
When viewed through an electron microscope the proteins are scattered throughout the bilayer
Describe what a phosphate head is and it’s role
Polar (hydrophilic)
Faces aqueous environment
Regulates fluidity
Restricts movement of phospholipids
Influences permeability of membrane
Describe a fatty acid tail
Non polar (hydrophobic)
Faces outwards away from aqueous environment
Role of phospholipid
Barrier to water soluble compounds- prevents hydrophilic substances from passing through
Allows passage of lipid soluble substances
Hydrophobic interactions with integral proteins
Fatty acid tails maintain fluidity
What is the structure of a phospholipid molecule
Polar phosphate head
Hydrophobic fatty acid tails
