Cell membranes Flashcards
What is the function of a cell membrane?
Control which substances enter and leave the cell.
What is the fluid mosaic model?
Multiple components that Canmore around each other constantly. Proteins are scattered throughout the bilayer, like tiles in a mosaic. These include channel and carrier proteins which allow large molecules and ions to pass through the membrane
Define osmosis.
T he movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential.
What is water potential?
The potential likelihood of water molecules to diffuse out or into a solution.
What does isotonic mean?
When two solutions have the same water potential.
Define active transport.
The movement of dissolved molecules into or out of a cell through the cell membrane, of a region of low concentration to a region of higher concentration.
Define simple diffusion.
The net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of higher concentration.
Define facilitated diffusion.
Large or charged particles diffuse through carrier proteins or channel proteins in the membrane.
