Cell Membrane - Diffusion & Osmosis Flashcards
What is Cell Membrane?
controls movement of material in and out of cell
selectively permeable
Why do substances need to enter and leave?
to transport nutrients or excrete waste
What is Diffusion?
molecules move to area of HIGH concentration to LOW concentration until equally distributed
does not require help
What is Osmosis?
movement from HIGH water concentration to LOW water concentration
(also low solute to high solute –> high solute can’t pass through cell membrane)
What are 3 situations of Osmosis?
Isotonic, Hypotonic, Hypertonic
Isotonic
concentration of water outside = inside (Equal amounts will let water move in and out constantly after)
Hypotonic
water outside MORE that water inside cell
water moves INTO cell
animal cell after hypotonic?
lysis: cell bursts
plant cell after hypotonic?
plant cell: strong cell wall –> becomes
(turgid) swollen from absorbing water
Hypertonic
water outside LESS than water inside cell
water moves OUT of cell
cell shrinks and wrinkles
animal cell after hypertonic
crenation
plant cell after hypertonic
plasmolysis - cytoplasm pulls away from cell wall
