Cell Membrane Components Flashcards
Name the components in the cell membrane.
Glycolipids, glycoproteins, cholosterol, extrinsic and intrinsic proteins.
What is a glycoprotein?
A protein molecule with a carbohydrate branched from it.
Why is a glycolipid?
A lipid molecule with carbohydrate attached to it.
Function of glycolipid and glycoprotein.
Act as recognition sites (glycoprotein e.g. hormones and glycolipid e.g. cholera toxins).
Function of cholesterol.
For flexibility and stability.
Difference between extrinsic and intrinsic proteins.
Extrinsic proteins are found on the external surface of the membrane and Intrinsic proteins are found within the bilayer as a whole unit interred with the phospholipid bilyaer
How can the position of the extrinsic and intrinsic proteins relate to their function?
Extrinsic can be found on the external surface so it is able to act as a receptor and bind to other substances and generally, as an adhesion molecule. Intrinsic is found internally and can act as a channel or pore letting substances in and out.
