Cell Membrane Flashcards
Fluidity
Affected by temperature, double bond in the fatty acids, and fatty acid tail length
Phospholipid bilayer
2 layers of lipids that let particles in & out of the cell
Carrier protein
Changes shape to bind to particles to transport them across the lipid bilayer
Channel protein
A pore in the membrane that allows for small molecules like water or ions to pass through
Cholesterol
Pressure of cholesterol works to counteract the effects of tempature. Controls fluidity
Fluid mosaic model
Weak intermolecular forces between lipids in bilayer allows for quick sealing of punctures or damage
Proteins
In membrane or attached to outer regions
Functions:
-transport
-reaction catalyst- enzymes
-cell recognition - carbs from glycoproteins- immune system
-signal recognition- hormones
