Cell Inteeractions 1 Flashcards
What is the ECM ?
The stuff outside the cell
What are two things mixed together that make up the ECM
Gel like substances and fibrous type substances
What environment do the gel like substances have ?
Squishy like environment
What do cells create on their own by secreting polysaccharides and proteins ?
They create their own Extra cellular environment
What does the ECM do ?
Provide an attachment point for our cells
What is an example of the ECM providing an attachment point for our cells ?
Our bones because bones are mostly ECM so cells will attach to them
What happens when a cell becomes detached from the bone ?
It drifts in the body and becomes one of two leading factors that cause cancer
How many primary molecules make up the ECM ?
Two primary Molecules
What are the two primary molecules that make up the ECM called ?
Proteins and polysaccharides
What do proteins provide for the ECM ?
Provide tough and fibrous strength for the ECM
What do polysaccharides do for the ECM ?
They get secreted by the cell and when in the ECM they trap water in the sugar swell up into a gel like state.
What will the ECM always have ?
Proteins and sugars
Do stronger ECMs have more proteins or polysaccharides ?
Proteins
What is the main ECM protein called ?
Collagen
What proteins will all ECM have some of ?
Collagen
What is the first thing we should do to collagen ?
Wrap it tightly together
Where are collagens modified ?
In the ER
What allows for for hydrogen bonding between strands ?
An OH group
What is the main reason why the disease Scurvy happens ?
The reason is because collagen is not being held together
Why may collagen stop being held together ?
The enzyme propyl hydroxylase is not working
What vitamin is required in order to make the enzyme propyl hydroxylase functional ?
Vitamin C
What happen to your ECM if collagen is not functioning?
ECM becomes defective and causes your cells to fall apart
