Cell Injury Generally Flashcards
What is cell injury ?
Biochemical or /& morphological changes that occur when the state of homeostasis is affected by adverse influences
Types of cell injury according to severity
- Mild cell injury —— > reversible cell injury
- Severe cell injury ——— > irreversible cell injury
Reversible cell injury definition :
The cell can recover after the removal of the adverse influence
Irreversible cell injury :
The cell can not recover after the removal of adverse influence
Causes of cell injury :
- Oxygen deprivation 2. Nutrient imbalances
- Chemical , physical or infectious agents
- Aging
- Immunologic reactions
- Genetic defects
Oxygen deprivation effect :
- Hypoxia = oxygen deficiency , interferes with aerobic oxidative respiration
What cause hypoxia are :
- Ischemia = loss of blood supply
- Inadequate oxygenation of the blood
- Reduction in oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood
Ischemia causes :
- Arterial occlusion
- Loss of venous drainage
Inadequate oxygenation :
Diseases in the lung as pneumonia
Reduction of oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood :
- Carbon Monoxide poisoning
- Anemia
Nutrition imbalance:
- Excess of nutrition —> obesity —-> DM , hypertension, cancers OR atherosclerosis
- Nutrition deficiency 1. Calorie insufficiency (protein ) ….. poor population
2. Vitamin deficiency as scurvy and rickets
Physical agents
- Extreme of temperature
- Electric shock
- Trauma
- Radiation
5.sudden changes in atmospheric pressure
Chemical agents ( poisons ) examples :
- Air pollutants. 2. CO 3. Oxygen in high partial pressure 4. Asbestos 5. Ethanol 6. Insecticides
How chemical agents cause cell injury :
- Increasing membrane permeability as mercury in mercuric chloride poisoning
2.binding to mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase as cyanide
Infectious agents
All viruses can cause cell injury and bacteria depending on specific criteria
Bacterial ability to cause injury :
- Its ability to adhere and enter host cells
- Its ability to cause hypersensitivity reaction
- Its ability to deliver endo or exogenous toxins
Genetic defects
As in sickle cell anemia and Down syndrome
Aging
- affects the replication ability of the cells
