Q

Where does Respiration occur in the cell

A
  1. In the cytosol via glycolysis
  2. in the mitochondria via the citric acid cycle
  3. In mitochondrial membranes via oxidative phosphorylation

Q

Mitochondria facts

A
  1. High energy cells = lots of mitochondria
  2. Mitochondria used to be organisms! They have their own DNA and ribosomes, and they can move, fuse, divide and change shape independent of the cell

Q

Mitochondria structure

A

Two bilayered membranes

  1. inner membrane has folds (cristae)
  2. space between cristae is called the matrix
  3. space between membranes is called intermembrane space

Q

ATP

A
  • Molecule known as adenosine triphosphate
  • “carries energy”
  • used at an enormous rate

Q

How do you turn ADP to ATP

A

Turning adenosine diphosphate (ADP) into ATP (phosphorylation) requires energy (from food, transport ect)
