Cell division - Part 1: Interphase Flashcards
eukaryotic cells
large and linear genome, DNA in nucleus
prokaryotic cells
small and circular genome, DNA in cytoplasm
interphase
time between successive mitoses
G1 phase
cell grows (cellular metabolism)
S phase
synthesis of DNA (DNA is replicated)
G2 phase
preparation for mitosis (cell grows larger)
G0
cells not participating in cell division, temporary or permanent (neurons), cells called quiescent
M phase
mitosis: chromosomal separation and cytokinesis
homologous chromosomes
set of one maternal and one paternal chromosome that pair up with each other inside a cell during fertilization
sex chromosomes
type of chromosome involved in sex determination, XX (female) and XY (male)
ploidy
the complete number of sets of chromosomes in a cell
haploid (n)
a cell with one complete set of chromosomes (ex: sperm cell)
diploid (2n)
a cell with two complete sets of chromosomes, one maternal and one paternal (ex: somatic cells)
