Cell Division: Mitosis Flashcards
Mitosis
mitosis is the process of cell division
why is it important for cells to divide
the larger a cell becomes the more demands the cell places on its DNA
Allows the cell to heal and repair tissue
Allows the organism to survive even if some cells die
Allows for cells to differentiate and become specialized tissues
The cell cycle
During the cell cycle a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form two daughter cells, each of which then begins the cell cycle again
inter phase
the period of cell cycle between cell divisions
- G1
- S
- G2
the phases of mitosis
pro phase
meta phase
anaphase
telophase
prophase
Chromatin condenses and the chromosomes quill tightly. the nucleus . they help organize the spindle fibers. centrals-two tiny structures located in the cytoplasm near the nuclear envelope. the nuclear envelope breaks down.
Meta phase
The chromosomes line up across the center of the cell at the meta phase plate.
Micro tubules from the spindle fibers connect to the centro-mere of each chromosome.
Ana phase
The sister chromatids separate into individual chromosomes and are moved to the poles of the cell by the spindle fibers.
Telophase
The chromosomes gather at opposite ends of the cell and lose their distinct shape.
Two new nuclear envelopes form around each cluster of chromosomes.
Cytokinesis
The cytoplasm pinches in half and each daughter cell has an identical set of duplicate chromosomes.
