Cell Division Flashcards
1
Q
What are Chromosomes made from?
A
Chromosomes are made from molecules of DNA and can be found in the nucleus of a cell.
Each chromosome carries a large number of genes. Chromosomes are typically found in pairs in body cells.
2
Q
Body cells have __ as many chromosomes as sex cells.
A
2x
3
Q
What does mitosis allow?
A
Allows for the growth, repair and asexual reproduction of cells.
4
Q
What happens during the initial growth stage?
A
- Extra ribosomes, mitochondria and other sub-cellular structures are produced.
- The cell’s chromosomes (which are made of DNA) are replicated so that there are two sets of the cell’s chromosomes.
5
Q
How does the nucleus divide into two during mitosis?
A
The two sets of chromosomes are pulled to opposite ends of the cell. Then, the nucleus divides into two.
6
Q
What is the final step of mitosis?
A
- The cytoplasm and cell membranes are divided resulting in the production of two identical cells.
