Cell Division Flashcards
What are the 2 types of cell division
Mitosis and meiosis
DNA replication
the process when a double-stranded DNA molecule is copied to produce two identical DNA molecules
Chromatid
One of the strands of DNA following replication
Mitosis
Cell division that produces 2 daughter cells identical to the parent cell
Asexual reproduction
Reproduction not involving the union of gametes
Homologous chromosome
Chromosomes with genes for particular characteristics in the same location
Meiosis
Cell division that produces gametes with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell
Sexual reproduction
Reproduction involving the union of gametes
Gamete
Sex cells - sperm and egg
Are gametes diploid or haploid?
Haploid
What are somatic cells? Are they diploid or haploid?
Body cells - diploid
What is reduction division?
The first cell division in meiosis
Where in interphase do the chromosomes replicate?
Synthesis
What happens in cytokinesis?
Cell membranes form, makes 2 daughter cells each with a nucleus
Difference between haploid and diploid
Diploid cells have a full set of chromosomes - 2n (body cells)
Haploid cells have half of a full set of chromosomes - n (sex cells)
