Cell Division Flashcards
Anaphase
Phase of mitosis when the sister chromatids separate and begin to move towards the opposite ends of the cell.
Metaphase
Phase of mitosis when the chromosomes are aligned along the equator of the cell.
Kinetochore
Structure made of proteins that the mitotic spindle fibers attach to; found at the centromere
Prophase
Phase of mitosis when the chromosomes first begin to condense.
Telophase
Phase of mitosis when new nuclear membranes begin to form around the chromosomes in each of the two new daughter cells.
Cytokinesis
The process whereby the cell membrane and cytoplasmic contents are separated into the two daughter cells
Interphase
Phase of the cell cycle that includes the G1, S, and G2 phases
Prometaphase
Phase of the cell cycle during which the chromosomes attach to the mitotic spindle and begin to move towards the equator of the cell; the nuclear envelope becomes fully broken down during this phase
Microtubules
One of the types of cytoskeletal filaments; Mitotic spindle is made of these
Karyotype
A technique in which the metaphase chromosomes are lined up in their respective homologous pairs, allowing the scientists to identify any chromosomal abnormalities
Centromere
The region on the chromosome where the sister chromatids are attached to each other; kinetochore will form here
Cyclins
A group of proteins that help to control the progression of the cell cycle
Cdk
A group of proteins that work with cyclin proteins to control the cell cycle
S phase
Phase of the cell cycle when DNA replication occurs
G1 and G2 phases
Phases of the cell cycle when the cell grows larger and carries out its normal day-to-day functions
