Cell Division Flashcards
What parts of the cell are visible during metaphase? (By a microscope)
Centrioles, spindle fibres, and chromosomes
What do spindle fibres do during anaphase?
They are retracting and pulling daughter chromatins to opposite poles.
What is the longest phase? What is occurring?
Interphase. The cell is receiving instructions for division, while duplicating organelles and DNA
During what phase are daughter cells separate?
Cytokinesis.
In what phase do the daughter nuclei form? What else happens during this phase?
Telophase. Cytoplasm is divided and the chromatins unwind inside the newly formed nuclei
Name the three parts that make up a chromosome
2 chromatin + 1 centromere= 1 chromosome
What is the difference between centromeres, centrioles, and centrosomes?
A pair of centriole makes up a centrosome, which releases spindle fibres during cell division
A centromere holds sister chromatids together.
In what phase does the nuclear membrane dissolve?
Prophase
What are the 4 phases of mitosis?
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
PMAT
In what phase does the cell go through a “checkpoint” and checks for mutated DNA etc?
Prophase.
What 2 phases are not phases of mitosis?
Interphase and cytokinesis
What occurs during prophase?
DNA condenses into chromosomes, and centrioles position at each pole
What are the cells called during cell division?
Parent cell, daughter cells
What type of reproduction is cell division?
Asexual reproduction
What is the difference between sexual and asexual reproduction? (Cellular…..DNA)
Asexual: daughter cells are an exact genetic copy of the parent cell
Sexual: DNA is mixed and matched from each if the 2 parent cells
