Cell division Flashcards
What’s the second stage of mitosis?
Prophase
What’s the third stage of mitosis?
Metaphase
What’s the fourth stage of mitosis
Anaphase
What’s the fifth stage of mitosis?
Telophase
What’s the final stage of mitosis
Cytokinesis
State two things that happen in the interphase
DNA replicates joined in a centromere
Cell is actively synthesising proteins etc
Chromosomes are invisible
State two things that happen during the prophase
Chromosomes become visible (initially long thin threads which later shorten and thicken)
Centrioles appear and spindle fibres develop
Nucleus breaks down
State two things that happen in the metaphase
The chromosomes arrange themselves on the equator of the cell
The microtubules attach to the centromere
State two things that happen in the Anaphase
The centromeres divide in two breaking the chromosomes apart.
The chromatids are then pulled to their respective pole by spindle fibres, we now refer to them as chromosomes
State two things that happen in the telophase
The chromosomes become longer and disappear
The nuclear envelope and nucleoli a reform
What happens during cytokinesis?
The cytoplasm of a cell divides in two forming two a new cell.
In what order are the stages of mitosis?
Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis
What’s the first stage of mitosis?
Interphase
What are the 3 types of cell division call and where do they occur?
Mitosis-human and plant cells
Meiosis-human and plant cells
Binary fission-prokaryotic cells
What happens in Binary fission?
1- DNA loop replicates once, Plasmids replicate many times
2-the cell gets bigger and DNA loops move towards poles
3-cytoplasm begins to divide and a new cell wall begins to form
4-the cells divide. Each daughter cell has the same DNA loop but a variable number of plasmids
