Cell division Flashcards
1
Q
What is binary fission and the stages of it?
A
variety of interlinked processes.
1) cell elongates and DNA replicates. elongates to a set maximum size before initiation of division)
Different bacterial sizes in different strains.
2) cell wall and membrane divide
3) cross-wall forms completely around divided DNA.
4) cells separate (septation and division)
Not all cells fully separate.
2
Q
Describe cell wall structure
A
The cell wall is a sacculus made of peptidoglycan.
Peptidoglycan is sugar chains around the cell; each linked by short polymers of amino acids
