Cell division Flashcards
What is cell size determined by?
Diffusion distance to the centre of the cell, concentration gradient and number of reactants
How can cells change?
Cells can divide and grow repeatedly but they can also become specialised by their shape changing, organelles changing and developing specific function
What are examples of specialised cell division?
Intestinal lining cells, root tip cells, skin epidermal cells and liver cells
How long does it take intestinal lining cells divide?
8-10 hours
How long does it take root tip cells to divide?
20 hours
How long does it take skin epidermal cells to divide?
24 hours
How long does it take liver cells to divide?
1 year
What are cells if they no longer divide?
They are terminally differentiated
What are stem cells?
Cells that never specialise
What is the cell cycle?
A series of events that take place as one parent cell divides into 2 genetically identical daughter cells
How does growth occur?
By mitosis
Why must DNA be copied?
DNA chromosomes contain genes or proteins involved in all cell activity
What does meiosis make?
Gametes which results in variation
What is DNA?
A very long molecule made of 2 strands
What is a chromosome made up of?
A p arm and q arm, joined together by a centromere which are genetically identical
