Cell Differention and Specialisation Flashcards
How do cells become specialised?
They differentiate
What is differentiation?
The process when cell changes to become specialised for its ‘job’
What happens while cells change?
They develop different subcellular structures and turn into different types of cells
What are sperm cells specialised for?
Reproduction
What are nerve cells specialised for?
Rapid signalling
What are muscle cells specialised for?
Contraction
What are root hair cells specialised for?
Abosrbing water and minerals
What are phloem and xylem cells specialised for?
Transporting Substances
Are xylem cells hollow or do they have very few subcellular structures?
Hollow
Are phloem cells hollow or do they have very few cubcellular structures?
They have very few subcellular structures
Where are root hair cells on a plant?
On the surface of the plant roots
What do root hair cells help a plant with?
Gives the plant a big surface area, for absorbing water and mineral ions from the soil
What is the function of a muscle cell?
For it to contract quickly
What does a muscle cell contain?
What does it do?
1) Lots of mitochondria
2) Generate the energy needed for a contraction
What is the function of a nerve cell?
To carry electrical signals from one part of the body to another
