Cell deff Flashcards
Cell Membrane
-barrier between cell and its
environment
-supports and protects the cell
-regulates what can enter and leave
the cell
Chloroplast
-uses energy from the sun for
photosynthesis so that food can be
made
Endoplasmic
Reticulum
-rough: involved in protein
production, sends some proteins to
the Golgi body and some to the cell
membrane
-smooth: involved with the
production, metabolism, and
storage of fats and steroids
Golgi
Body
-sorts and processes proteins from
the rough ER, packages them in
vesicles, then stores them for later
use or transports them through the
cell
Lysosome
-for digestion, breaks down waste
-breaks down large food particles
into smaller particles
-breaks down harmful substances
Mitochondrion
-“powerhouse” of cell, breaks down
food and releases energy
-uses oxygen in this process and
gives off carbon dioxide
Nucleus
control center
Ribosome
site of protein synthesis
Vacuole
-stores food, water, waste, and
dissolved minerals (materials that
are not immediately used)
Cell Wall
-shapes and supports a plant cell,
makes cell rigid, allows gases (H2O,
O2, CO2) to enter and exit cell
Chlorophyll
-traps energy from sun
Cytoplasm
-fills the cell and other parts of the
cell float in it
-helps to move materials to different
parts of the cell
Nucleolus
-makes ribosomes
