Cell death Flashcards
What correlates to the amount of innervation a target receives?
Size of the target = more innervation
What therefore might the target be providing?
Trophic support
Is the target telling it to make more neurons or is trimming off neurons when a target is reached?
Trimming off
What is the neurotrophic factor hypothesis therefore?
- Neurons are produced in excess and that excess is eliminated over time
- Neurotrophic factors emanate from targets to promote survival according to tissue size
What are the types of antiapoptotic genes?
Pro-apoptotic
Anti-apoptotic
What are the 2 classes of caspase?
Initiator caspase (e.g. caspase 9) Executioner/effector caspase (e.g. caspase 1)
What is the difference between tropic and trophic?
Trophic – nourish
Tropic – drive or turn into
What happens if the neuronal processes have no NGF?
They retract but they can also guide growth cones in vitro
Is NGF tropic or trophic?
BOTH!!!!!
What is the high affinity receptor for NGF?
TrkA
- Tyrosine kinase receptor
What neurotrophin (NT) supports many neuronal types early in development?
NT3
What caspase is activated at NGF deprived sites?
Caspase 6
What is caspase 6 activated by?
Amyloid precursor protein (APP) which binds to death receptor 6
What family does death receptor 6 belong to?
Tumour necrosis factor (TNF)
