Cell Cycle and Mitosis Flashcards
What are the two reasons why cells have to divide?
Repair, Growth
Explain what DNA overload means
When the replication system can’t keep up with the demand for DNA.
What is the cell cycle?
A series of events where a cell divides and grows.
What are the 4 stages of the cell cycle?
G1, S, G2, M phase
What are the four stages of mitosis, in order?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
Prophase
Chromosomes become visible as paired chromatids and the nuclear envelope disappears.
Metaphase
Nucleus dissolves and the cell’s chromosomes condense and move together.
Anaphase
Chromosomes move away from each other to opposite sides of the spindle.
Telophase
Chromosomes move to opposite ends and create two new nuclei.
Interphase
Cell live for 90% of it’s life in this phase.
G1
Cells grow during this phase.
G0
The cell is neither dividing or preparing to divide.
S
DNA is replicated during this time.
G2
Cells prepare fir divison.
Mitosis
A type of cell division that will end with two new cells called daughter cells.
