Q

Plasma membrane

A

Regulates movement of substances into and out of cell. Receptors allow cell to respond to chemicals e.g. Hormones

A

Controls the exit and entry of molecules in the nucleus. Contains nuclear pores allowing large molecules like mRNA out.

Q

Golgi apparatus

A

Modifies the proteins and lipids produced in the ER. Carb molecules are added to produce glycoproteins and glycolipids. Also packages them into vesicles. Vesicles formed are Golgi vesicles or lysosomes

Q

Mitochondria

A

The site of aerobic respiration which releases energy. It is oval shaped and surrounded by a double membrane . The inner membrane is folded to form cristae.

16
Q

Microvilli

A

Folds in the cell membrane, providing a large surface area for absorption of molecules.

17
Q

Cell wall

A

Rigid structure surrounding the cell. Provides the cell with support and prevents it from bursting open.

18
Q

What is the cell wall in plants made from?

A

The carbohydrate cellulose

19
Q

What are the channels of cytoplasm in cell walls called?

A

Plasmodesmata

20
Q

Chloroplast

A

The site of photosynthesis. Flattened structure surrounded by a double membrane.

21
Q

What is the name of the thick fluid in chloroplasts?

A

Stroma

22
Q

What are grana?

A

Stacked thylakoid membranes in chloroplasts. Linked together by thin pieces of membrane called lamellae.

23
Q

Vacuole

A

A membrane-bound organelle found in the cytoplasm. Contains cell sap, maintaining pressure in the cell and keeping rigidity. Also involved in the isolation of unwanted chemicals inside the cell.
