Cell Communication Flashcards
What does a desmosome do?
Join cells
What is the function of a gap junction?
Communication
What is a tight junction?
A belt around cell, anchor to neighbouring cells
Not attached to cytoskeleton
Stops membrane proteins moving past it
What is attached to the cytoskeleton and what is not?
Desmosome is
Tight junction is not
What is the role of a desmosome?
Anchor cells together
Cadherins form the links between the plaques in the individual cells
To do with structure
What is the role of a gap junction?
Channels/bridges formed from connections, allow small molecules and ions to pass through between cells
Can be chemical or electrical
What is paracrine?
Cells nearby communicating, short distance communication
What is an example of a paracrine hormone?
Nitric oxide - local vasodilator released from endothelial cells
What is auto-communication?
Cell communicating with itself
What is an example of autocommunication?
Prostaglandins - inflammatory mediator
What are neural examples of communicators?
glutamate - excitatory in CNS
acetyl choline - excites skeletal muscle
noradrenaline - causes vasodilation
What are examples of amino acid derived hormones?
Adrenaline and noradrenaline
What are the features of catecholamines?
Circulate freely or weakly bound to albumin
Short half life
Bind to GPCR
What are the features of thyroid hormones T3 and T4?
Circulate bound to plasma proteins
Long half lives
Transported through membranes and bind to nuclear receptors
What are examples of steroid hormones?
Oestrogen Androgens Aldosterone Circulate bound to plasma proteins but easily diffuse through cells Intracellular
