Cell Communication Flashcards
What is Cell Signalling?
The process of cell to cell communication
What are the two main examples of cell signalling systems?
Hormonal/ Endocrine
Nervous
What is the method of travel of nervous system?
Electrical with chemical around synapse
What is the method of travel of the hormonal system?
Chemical
How is the nervous system targeted to perform a particular response?
Short distance signalling
Lots of different connections
Long elongated cells
How is the hormonal system targeted to perform a particular response?
Longer distance signalling
Every cell in body comes in contact with hormone but only targeted cells are affected.
Speed of Nervous system response?
Fast
Immediate
Speed of Hormonal system response?
Slow
Nervous system response duration?
Temporary and short
Hormonal system response duration?
Long lasting. Liver breaks down hormones.
How is information transmitted in the Nervous system?
Information is passed neuron to neuron via neurotransmitters over the synapse.
How is information transmitted in the Hormonal system?
Endocrine balance release hormones into the blood stream. Targeted organs detect hormone and respond.
How broad are the effects of the Nervous system?
small
How broad are the effects of the hormonal system?
wide
Example of Nervous system use?
Muscle contractions. Animals only
