cell/cell transport Flashcards
Cell Theory
All living things are composed of cells, cells are the basic unit of life, and the cell is a fundamental unit of life
Eukaryotic
Organisms whose cells have a nucleus enclosed within the nucleus envelop
Prokaryotic
Single cell organisms of the domains bacteria and algae
Organelle
Tiny cellular structure that performs a specific action within the cell
flagella
a slender threadlike structure, especially a microscopic appendage that enables many protozoa, bacteria, spermatozoa, etc. to swim.
cilia
a short microscopic hairlike vibrating structure found in large numbers on the surface of certain cells, either causing currents in the surrounding fluid, or, in some protozoans and other small organisms, providing propulsion
passive transport
A movement of ions and other atomic or molecular substances across the cell membrane without need of energy input
concentration gradient
Process of solutes moving through a solution or gas from an area with higher number of particles
diffusion
The spread if something widely
osmosis
a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one, thus equalizing the concentrations on each side of the membrane
hypertonic solution
A solution that contains more dissolved products in the normal cells and blood
isotonic solution
One that has the same osmorlarity, or solute concentrate as another solution
active transport
The movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration, assisted by enzymes and requiring energy
endocytosis
the taking in the matter of a living cell by invagination of its membrane to form a vacuole
exocytosis
a process by which the contents of a cell vacuole are released to the exterior through fusion of the vacuole membrane with the cell membrane
