cell biology. Flashcards
how do you calculate the magnification of a microscope?
magnification of the microscope=magnification of eyepiece X magnification of objective.
how do you calculate the magnification of an image?
magnification= size of image/real size of object
(/=divided by).
function of the nucleus?
the nucleus contains genetic material, including DNA and controls the cells activities.
function of the cytoplasm?
cytoplasm (a jelly like substance), contains dissolved nutrients, salts & structures-organelles. this is where many chemical reactions happen.
function of the cell membrane?
controls the movement of substances, in and out of the cell.
function of mitochondria?
organelles that contain the enzymes for respiration, and where most energy is released in respiration.
function of ribosomes?
tiny structures where protein synthesis occurs.
function of chloroplast in plant cells?
organelles that contain chlorophyll-which absorbs light for photosynthesis. it also contains enzymes for photosynthesis!
function of a cell wall in plant cells?
made up of cellulose fibres that strengthen the cell and support the plant.
function of a permanent vacuole in a plant cell?
filled with cell sap to help keep the cell turgid.
cells of bacterial are called…
prokaryotic cells
cells of animals, plants and fungi are called…
eukaryotic cells
what is a eukaryotic cell?
a cell that contains a nucleus.
what is a prokaryotic cell?
a simple cell that does not have a nucleus. the DNA is free in the cytoplasm.
