CELL BIOLOGY: 1.2 Cell Structure Flashcards
1
Q
Prokaryotic cells
A
Organism who lack a nucleus (primitive cells)
Classified into 2 domains:
- Archaebacteria - found in extreme environments
- Eubacteria - bacterias
- No internal compartmentalism
- No membrane bound organelles
- All metabolic reactions occur within the cytoplasm
- DNA found in nucleoid region and plasmid

Q
Reproduction of prokaryotic cells
A
- Binary fission - asexual reproduction
- The circular DNA is copied in response to a replication signal
- Chromosomes are replicated semi-conservatively
- Cell grows twice its size
- Membrane elongates and pitches off (cytokinesis) forming two identical daughter cells
- Each has the potential to grow into the size of the original cell
4
Q
Eukaryotic cells
A
- Contain nucleus
- Evolved from prokaryotic cells
- Compartmentalised by membrane bound structures that perform specific functions
5
Q
4 domains of eukaryotic cells
A
- Protista: unicellular or multicellular without specialised tissues
- Fungi: have a cell wall made of chitin and heterotrophic absorption
- Plantae: have a cell wall made of cellulose and is autotrophic
- Animalia: no cell wall and heterotrophic
