Cell Adaptations Flashcards
1
Q
Paliside Cell - To allow photosynthesis
A
- Large Surface Area to absorbe CO2 and light
- Contains chloroplasts needed for photosynthesis
- Closely packed together
2
Q
Egg Cell - To carry genetic information from the mother to the offspring
A
- Yolk to provide large food store
- Chromosomes to carry info
- Membrane changes to let 1 sperm in
3
Q
Sperm Cell - To carry genetic information from the father to the offspring
A
- Small
- Lots of mitochondria
- Little tail which allows it to swim (streamline)
- Head contains enzymes allowing the nuclei to join
4
Q
Red Blood Cell - To carry oxygen
A
- Big surface area for absorbing the oxygen
- No nucleus to leave more room for haemoglobin
- Small enough to fit in capillaries
5
Q
Ciliated Cell - To stop lung damage
A
- Tiny hairs to filter the air and move dust and dirt
- The hair sweeps up mucas
- Line all air passages
6
Q
Root Hair Cell - Designed for absorbing
A
- Long root hair increases the surface area to help absorb water and minerals
- Thin cell wall so minerals can pass across into the root
7
Q
Guard Cell - To open and close pores
A
- Kidney shaped to open and close stomata
- Sensitive to light to save water
- Thin outer wall-open close more easily
