cell Flashcards
Golgi body
stacked, flattened membranes that sort proteins and other substances, package them and ship them out to other parts of the cell. The “ post office” of the cell.
Chloroplast
found only in plant cells, this is where photosynthesis takes place. Contains green pigment called chlorophyll
Cell membrane
regulates what comes into and what leaves the cell.
Cytoplasm
the gelatin-like material inside every cell. The organelles float around in it.
Ribosome
found within the nucleus, this is where ribosomes are made.
Lysosome
larger in plant cells than in animal cells this is where food and waste and water is stored
Mitochondria
breaks down food molecules, cell wastes and worn out cell parts
Nucleus
Directs all of the cell’s activities.
Nucleolus
releases energy from food that is needed by the cell. The “ powerhouse” of the cell.
Endoplasmic reticulum
manufactured in the nucleolus, these move out into the cytoplasm and float freely, or attach to the rough ER. make proteins
Cell wall
rigid structure that encloses, supports and protects the cells plants, algae, fungi and most bacteria
Endoplasmic reticulum
cytoplasmic organelles that move material around in a cell is made up of a complex aries of folded membranes can be rough ( with attached ribosomes ) or smooth ( without attached ribosomes )
Host cell
living cell in which a virus can actively multiply or in which a virus can hide until activated by a environmental stimuli
Organ
structure such as the heart made up of different types of tissues that all work together
Tissue
group of similar cells that work together to do one job
