Exposition
The start of the story, which provides background information about the characters and setting.
Rising action
The point at which the story “takes off” and begins to build toward a climax; The rising action is caused by a complication
Climax
The highest point of action in a story; also known as the turning point
Falling action
The events after the climax; when the story begins to wrap up
Resolution/denouement
The ending of the story; usually, but not always, The conflict has been resolved
Conflict
Conflict is a part of every plot; it means a struggle between two or more forces
Man vs. man
A struggle between two or more characters
Man vs. nature
A struggle between a character and a force of nature
Man vs. society
A struggle between a character and his/her society
Man vs. self
An internal struggle that occurs within the characters own mind
Setting
The time, place, and circumstances of the story
Characterization
The way the author develops the personalities of his/her characters is called characterization. Remember this acronym to help you understand how characterization is used:
Speech
Thoughts
Effects on others
Actions
Looks(the least important, as a person’s looks don’t necessarily reflect personality)
Flat character
A flat character isn’t well developed
Round character
A round character is well developed
Static character
A static character doesn’t grow and change during the story
