Celibacy and marriage Flashcards
What do Mormons believe about marriage?
. 4th largest Christian denomination in the US
.God directs them through revelations, revealing himself to the church leader (modern day prophet)
. Revelation of plural marriage 1852 Brigham Young- practice became common.
. Could only achieve the highest level of heaven if they had been a partner in a plural marriage
What happened as a result of what people thought about child Mormons?
. Concerns about child marriages, child abuse + incest; the Mormon church renounced polygamy and excommunicated those who practiced it
. Led to a church split: The Mormon Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) was formed, continuing practice - leaders pick partners
. The Centennial Park fundamentalist Mormon group -1980s, practice polygamy- can pick own partners
What example of polygamy is there in the Bible?
- Old test men marrying more than one wife at a time, e.g Solomon- 700 wives, 300 concubines
What do those against polygamy argue about it in the Bible?
- e.g were living in different ancient times- whilst they were told in the Bible doesn’t mean they were approved by God
-can be implied that only men are allowed to marry many partners ‘while her husband is alive if she marries another man, she is adulteress’ (Romans 7:1-4)
How can it be argued that God is against Polygamy?
- Adam and Eve as the basis for it being God’s intent that marriage should be a monogamous relationship between one man and one woman
- ‘A man shall leave his parents, and shall join his wife: and they shall become one’ (Genesis 2:23-24)
What did the Equality act state about same sex marriages?
- it is not unlawful discrimination for a religious organisation or representation to refuse to marry a same sex couple.
What does the same sex marriage 2013 state about same sex marriages?
it specifically states that no church minister can be compelled ‘by any means’ to carry out a same-sex marriage
