1 Air Gauge & Governor Cutoff Check
1. Fan air pressure to 90 psi.
2. Start vehicle in NIGHT RUN.
3. Ensure air gauge working & builds pressure 2 governor cutoff (120-140 psi).
4. “THE AIR GAUGE IS WORKING.”
5. “THE GOVERNOR CUTOFF ENGAGED.
6. THE VALVE IS W/I RANGE & PASSED.”
2 Air Leakage Rate Test
- Shut off engine & return key to “night run.”
- Fully apply service brake.
- Release parking brake.
- “Once air gauge has stabilized,” hold service brake for one minute.
- “Air gauge must not drop more than 3 lbs. in 1 minute.”
3 Air Warning Device Test
-
Begin fanning off pressure w/o starting engine.
2.“The low air warning device (light) should activate BEFORE air pressure drops below 55 psi.”
4 Emergency Brake Valve Test
- Continue to fan off air pressure.
- “The air brake valve should close (pop out) between 20-45 psi.
5 Parking Break Test
“If wheel chocks were placed, remove them.
1. Start engine in “night run.”
2. Build air pressure.
3. Place coach into drive.
4. Allow coach to roll forward @ not more than 2 mph.
5. Pop parking brake.
6 Service Brake
- Release parking brake.
- Pull forward to no more than 5 mph, apply the service brake, coming to complete stop
- “Checking to see that vehicle stops and does not pull to one side or the other.”
- Turn the master switch to off, then to “Night run.”
7 Lighting Indicators (Dash/Signals)
Make sure dash indicators work when the vehicle starts & when corresponding lights are turned on. Activate and point to each:
1. DEF indicator
2. ABS indicator came on and went off when starting the bus.
3. Start engine.
4. Left turn signal.
5. Right turn signal.
6. High beam.
7. Four-way.
8 Windshield and Traffic Monitoring Devices (Mirrors)
“Windshield is clean, no obstructions except for an inspection sticker.
No damage, cracks , or flaws in the glass.
All mirrors are clean and properly adjusted.”
9. Wipers /Washers
- Operate wipers, then washers.
- “Wiper arms and blades are secure, not damaged.”
10. Heater/Defroster
- Turn on/identify heater and defroster.
- “Working properly.”
11. Horn
- Honk once.
- “Working properly.”
12. Passenger Entry & Lift (Doors/Ramp)
- Open doors.
- “Entry doors are not damaged, operate smoothly, and close securely from the inside.”
- Point out step lights and back door green light.
- “Handrails are secure and step lights working.”
- “Entry step is clear, and tread is not loose or worn.”
- “Lift/ramp is not leaking, damaged or missing parts.”

“Lift/ramp is fully retracted and latched securely.”
TO OPERATE RAMP: - Shift to neutral.
- Engage parking brake.
- Kneel bus.
- Power ramp on.
- Deploy and retract ramp.
- Shut off engine.
13. Emergency Equipment (Consists of…)
- “Three red reflective triangles.”
- “Fire extinguisher- Charged and properly mounted.”
- “Circuit breakers - this bus is equipped with circuit breakers. They are located in the rear in the panel above the black louvered vent and in the panel to the left of the operator’s seat.”
14. Emergency Exits
- “Emergency exits are labeled, operate smoothly, and close securely from the inside.”
- “Release handles can be operated properly from inside of vehicle.”
- Point out and read description stickers.
- “ Roof, doors, windows.”
- Open and close one (1) window.
- “Window closes securely and not damaged.”
15. Passenger Seating
- “There are no broken seat frames.”
- “Seat frames are securely attached to the floor.”
- “Seat cushions are attached securely to the seat frames.”
16. Passenger Monitoring Devices - Mirrors
“All internal and external passenger mirrors and brackets are not bent, are mounted securely, no missing parts, properly adjusted, and clean.”
17-18 Lights Operations Check - Clearance Lights and Reflectors
“Amber clearance lights in the front and red clearance lights in the back.
Amber reflectors at the front and red reflectors at the rear.
Reflectors are securely attached, clean, not broken or missing.”
19 Front Lights
Ask examiner to exit and stand in front of vehicle.
1. High beams (thumbs up).
2. Low Beams (thumbs down).
3. Left Turn (thumb left).
4. Right Turn (thumb right).
5. 4-Way Hazards ( 4 fingers up).
20 Rear Lights.
Ask examiner to stand in rear.
1. Left turn (thumb left).
2. Right turn (thumb right).
3. 4-Way Hazards (4 fingers).
4. Taillights (flat hand).
5. Brake lights (clenched fist).
HOLD DOWN SERVICE BRAKE.
RELEASE PARKING BRAKE.
(BRAKE LIGHTS SHOULD FLASH).
REAPPLY PARKING BRAKE.
TURN MASTER SWITCH OFF, THEN “NIGHT RUN.”
21 Front of Vehicle (Light Lenses)
”Light lenses are the proper color, clean, not broken, and not missing.”
22 Steering System
”Power steering box is securely mounted and not leaking.”
All steering hoses and connections are not cracked, worn, or leaking.
”No missing nuts, bolts, or cotter keys.”
”Connecting links, rods and arms from the steering box to the wheel are not worn or cracked, and joints/sockets are not loose.”
23 Tire Inflation/Stems/Caps
”Check for proper inflation using a tire gauge.”
”Valve stems are accessible.”
”Valve caps and stems are not missing, damaged, or broken.”
24 Tire Condition
”No cuts or damage that expose body plies to the tire in the tread or sidewall.”
”No bumps and bulges in the sidewall.”
25 Tire Tread Depth
”Check with a tire gauge to ensure at least 4/32 of an inch on front, 2/32 in rear.”
26 Rims (4)
”Inspect for damaged, cracked or bent rims.
”No welding repairs or rust trails.”
”Inspect studs and bolt holes to make sure they are not elongated.”
”There are no missing or loose nuts and bolts.”
27 Lug Nuts (3)
”All lug nuts are present and tight.”
”There are no signs of rust trails or shiny threads that may show looseness.”
”No broken studs.”
28 Springs/Airbags, Shocks (Suspension-3)
”Suspension components are not visible.”
”Vehicle is sitting level both front to rear & side to side.”
”A leaning vehicle may indicate a suspension problem.”
29 Brake lines/Hoses/Leaks (3)
”Hoses or lines are not leaking and can supply air to brakes.”
”Hoses or lines are not cracked, worn, or frayed.”
”All hose and line couplings are fitted and secure.”
30 Brake Contaminants (1)
”Inspect for contaminants such as grease and oil on the brake lining or pads, and the brake drum or disc, which can affect braking.”
31 Side of Vehicle - Lenses and Reflectors (2)
”Light lenses are the proper color, clean, not broken or missing.”
”Reflectors are the proper color, clean, not broken or missing.”
32 Side of Vehicle - Traffic Monitoring Devices (Mirrors) (2)
”Mirrors are clean and not cracked.”
”Mirror brackets are not bent and are mounted securely with no missing parts.”
33 Side of Vehicle - Battery (1)
”Battery box cover or door is secure.”
34 Side of Vehicle - Fuel Tank/DEF Tank (3)
”Fuel and DEF tanks are securely mounted.”
”Caps are tight.”
”There are no leaks from tanks or lines.”
35 Rear of Vehicle - Lenses and Reflectors (2)
”Light lenses are the proper color, clean, not broken or missing.”
”Reflectors are the proper color, clean, nor broken or missing.”
36 Rear of Vehicle - Frame (1)
”No cracks, broken welds, and not missing.”
37 Rear of Vehicle - Fluid Levels (6)
”Oil is at proper level.”
”Level is between add and full marks.”
”Coolant is at proper level.”
”Level is between add and full marks.”
”Power steering fluid is at proper level.”
”Level is between add and full marks.”
38 Rear of Vehicle - Fluid & Air Leaks
”Check for puddles on the ground.”
”Check for dripping and fluids around and on the underside or the engine and transmission.”
”Inspect hoses and airlines for condition and leaks.”
