CCE 5 Final Flashcards
1
Q
Parts of the external ear
A
- Auricle/Pinna - movable cartilage and skin
- External Auditory canal - terminates at tympanic membrane / eardrum
2
Q
Outer 1/3rd External auditory canal
A
Cartilage
3
Q
Inner 2/3rds of the external auditory canal
A
Bone
4
Q
The external auditory canal is lined with glands that secrete _____ that lubricates and protects the ear
A
Cerumen
5
Q
What does cerumen do when chewing and talking
A
Migrates outward
6
Q
Parts and function of the Tympanic membrane
A
- Separated external and middle ear
- Transulcent, pearly gray
- Cone of light in anterioinferior corner
- Malleus - umbo and manubrium and short process seen
- Pars tensa - the rest of the TM
- Annulus - outer fibrous ring
7
Q
Middle ear - Function and parts
A
- Air filled cavity in temporal bone
- Malleus, in sum and stapes
- Oval window - at end of stapes
- Round window
- Eustachian tube
8
Q
What is the Eustachian tube?
A
- Connects middle ear with nasopharynx
- Opens with swallowing and yawning
- Allows equalization of pressure with altitude changes
9
Q
Parts of the inner ear
A
- Vestibule
- Semicircular canals
- Cochlea
10
Q
What is tinnitus? (6)
A
- Phantom sound
- Ringing, crackling, buzzing
- Louder with decreased environmental noise
- Cerumen, OM
- Ototoxic drugs - aspirin and naproxen
- Severe tinnitus can cause depression or anxiety
11
Q
What is vertigo?
A
- Rotational spinning with dysfunction of labyrinth
- Objective vertigo - room is spinning
- Subjective vertigo - self is spinning
12
Q
What are the 2 types of conduction of sound and describe them.
A
- Air Conduction
A. Sound waves travel through external ear and tympanic membrane then vibrate that travels to the Oval window of the cochlea via ossicles - Bone Conduction
A. Vibration of the skull bones. Travels directly to inner ear/cochlea bypassing external and middle ear
13
Q
What is Pure tone audiometery
A
- Assesses ability to hear tones at different frequencies
- Quantitative measure of hearing
14
Q
What are the 2 types of hearing loos?
A
- Conductive
- Sensorineural
15
Q
What is conductive hearing loss?
A
- Problem of external or middle ear
- Impacted cerumen
- Foreign bodies
- Perforated tympanic membrane
- Pus or serum in middle ear
- Otosclerosis
