CC3-Atomic Structure Flashcards
Atomic Structure
Atom-Smallest Neutral part in an element that can take part in chemical reactions
Atoms contain 3 subatomic particles: Protons, Neutrons and electrons
Charge and Mass of subatoms:
Proton, +1, 1
Neutron, +0, 1
Electron, -1, 1/1835
Atomic/Mass Number
-Rutherford explained atoms are mostly empty space, containing a small positive central nucleus that contains most of the mass, and Protons and Neutrons
Mass Number- Total amount of Protons and Neutrons
Atomic Number-Total number of electrons only
Elements in original Periodic Table were placed in order of mass number
Modern is placed in order of atomic number
Isotopes
Isotope- Same atomic number, different mass number(so different number of Protons)
Isotope Formula-
(a% X aMass)+(b% X bMass)/100
